Virginia Blood Services (VBS) is the nonprofit provider of blood products to area hospitals. When donors give blood with VBS, you are supporting patients in need every day.
VBS holds nearly 2,700 blood drives every year and has nine donor centers throughout the state including two in Richmond and others throughout Charlottesville, Chester, Glen Allen, Waynesboro, and Harrisonburg. It takes more than 400 donations every day to meet the needs of patients in Charlottesville, Emporia, Farmville, Fishersville, Harrisonburg, Richmond, South Hill, the Staunton/Waynesboro area, Roanoke/New River Valley, Northern Shenandoah Valley area and parts of West Virginia and Washington DC.
In 2017, the parent organization of Virginia Blood Services, ITxM, merged with Blood Systems—one of the oldest and largest non-profit community blood service providers in the country. Virginia Blood Services is now part of Blood Systems’ Northeast Division. The Northeast Division, headquartered in Pittsburgh where Central Blood Bank is located, is also made up of LifeSource in Chicago and eastern Pennsylvania, LifeShare Community Blood Services in northern Ohio and Virginia Blood Services.
