With the current weather across parts of the state, Virginia Blood Services is encouraging our loyal donors to visit a mobile blood drive or community donor center in the coming days, as these types of weather conditions impact our collections. It is always best to have an ample inventory in the event the weather should impact other regions that we could support or changes course suddenly.
Those donors with type O negative, A negative and B negative are especially encouraged to give when they can. Rh negative blood types can be transfused to Rh positive and negative patients. Type O negative is called the universal blood type because it can be transfused to any patient who needs blood regardless of their own blood type. Type O negative blood is often used in emergency situations when there isn’t time to determine a patient’s blood type, so donors with type O negative blood are encouraged to give regularly.
We also encourage donors with A positive, B positive and AB positive to try a platelet donation. This vital blood product most often goes to cancer patients received routine treatments that impact their platelet levels. Because the shelf life is only 5 days for platelets, hospitals are always in need.
Please help us secure our inventory needs by scheduling an appointment to donate.
